Soil Evaluation
Ecosystem Solutions, Inc. provides soil evaluation services for residential, municipal, commercial, and industrial projects in Rhode Island. Our soil evaluators are trained and licensed to perform soil evaluations using approved USDA terminology. We can also provide backhoe services when required for the evaluation.
Soil evaluations identify the characteristics of the soil that determine the seasonal high groundwater table, percolation rate, and any limiting factors that could affect the proper functioning of a septic system. In simple terms, this evaluation determines whether the soil is suitable for on site wastewater disposal. It is the first step toward obtaining a permit to construct a septic system. The results of the evaluation then guide the design engineer in selecting the appropriate septic system design for the property.
Proper soil conditions are essential for preventing sewage from reaching the ground surface or contaminating groundwater and nearby surface water resources. Many people have experienced a septic system that has backed up. This usually happens when the leaching field cannot disperse wastewater into the soil as quickly as it is receiving it from a home or business. This can lead to surface water contamination, unpleasant odors, and costly repairs.
In other situations, the soil may be too coarse, such as very sandy soil. In this case, wastewater can move through the soil too quickly and reach the groundwater before the soil has had time to properly treat it. This may contaminate a drinking water well with harmful pathogens or elevated nitrate levels. High nitrate levels can lead to health concerns such as the condition commonly known as blue baby syndrome. This type of septic failure often goes unnoticed because the system may appear to be functioning normally even while contamination is occurring.

Soil Evaluation Process
After the required application forms and fees are submitted and a backhoe operator is scheduled, the soil evaluation process generally follows the steps outlined below.
